Creative Food Culture: a menu for serving planet friendly palates

There are few things that are as deeply inherent to our cultures as food. Food brings people together, helps us to celebrate significant events, tells stories from our history and is tied to our beliefs and life choices. Our diets, however, are fuelling both the climate and ecological crises. Studies have shown that drivers linked to food production cause around 70% of terrestrial biodiversity loss and according to the IPCC the food sector accounts for 21 to 37 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

This Julie’s Bicycle webinar, with guest speakers from the food and cultural sectors including Sustainable Wine Solutions and Royal Court Theatre, will explore how our food and drink choices impact emissions, ecosystems and issues of social justice.

As our food system has become increasingly global and complex; we have become increasingly disconnected from understanding the ways in which what we consume impacts the earth and the livelihoods of those who live on the land used to grow and produce it.

Is veganism the answer to climate change? What policies can support the transition to more sustainable food systems? And what solutions can the cultural sector adopt to support staff and audiences to make more sustainable choices? Join us on Thursday 25 November to explore these questions and, more holistically, how we as a sector can help to drive the wider societal and system change that’s needed in tackling this piece of the climate crisis and whilst beginning to restore the nature we’ve already lost to land-use change.

Corinna Pyke, Sustainable Wine Solutions

With over 30 years experience spanning music, arts regeneration and, most recently, food and drink. Robert Smael, Royal Court Theatre

Robert works at the Royal Court Theatre as Catering & Operations Manager. Before joining in 2015, he held a variety of roles in the hospitality industry, specialising in theatre and events. He has a degree in Business Administration from the Maastricht Hotel Management School. Robert took over management of the Royal Court Bar & Kitchen in 2018 and has used his passion for sustainability to transform the business to become more financially viable whilst operating in a more ethical and harm-free way.
