Creative Climate Tools & E-Learning

Environmental Impact Tools Partnerships

About our CC Tools

The Creative Climate Tools (CC Tools) are a free carbon calculator that enables artists and cultural organisations to track their impact, record progress and make strategic changes in their environmental action. They include our unique Beyond Carbon impact tracker. Julie’s Bicycle provides the CC Tools to the sector free of charge.

Launched in 2010, the Creative Climate Tools (formally known as Creative Green Tools) were the first of their kind. They are globally recognised as the leading online environmental reporting tools designed specifically for the arts and culture sector.

Partnering with us

Julie’s Bicycle works in partnership with organisations and networks to offer paid consultancy, guidance and support to international organisations looking to develop their own tools, using and sharing the learnings gained from our years of experience working in footprint calculation and strategic environmental action.

We also offer custom licences, working collaboratively with you to develop bespoke adaptations of our Tools for you and your communities. We tailor aspects of the Tools to meet your specific needs, from multi-level user accounts, data input and storage, and impact data generation to report creation and support services.

At JB we believe that using carbon calculator and impact measurement tools are just a first step to taking environmental action. Our digital team collaborate with the wider team of cultural and environmental specialists at JB who can support you on this journey.

Recent tools partnerships

Over years of experience we have worked with many partners internationally. Recent partnerships include: Arts Council England, Centre for Sustainable Practice in the Arts (Canada), The Independent Music Companies Association (UK and USA) and British Film Institute. These collaborations have varied greatly, with every relationship yielding unique and exciting outcomes ranging from policy interventions to tools and learning programmes adapted and created for specific sectors and regions.

Arts Council England

Collaborating for over a decade

Julie’s Bicycle has partnered with ACE since 2012 pioneering a policy intervention to make environmental requirements a condition of funding, with our free tools provided to support this. The programme continues to build literacy, confidence and leadership skills, allowing cultural professionals the agency to act on climate change. Check out the latest impact report.

The Creative Green Tools Canada

Engaging the culture sector with Tools designed with arts organisations and Indigenous partners

In 2022, JB and the Centre for Sustainable Practice in the Arts (CSPA) launched The Creative Green Tools Canada (CG Tools), engaging and mobilising Canada’s creative sector with environmental reporting and action.

The CSPA acknowledge that Indigenous cultures and peoples as well as marginalised communities are disproportionately affected by the impacts of the climate crisis and environmental policies. As such, they have an ongoing relationship with Indigenous Knowledge Keepers and organisations, and have worked with them to shape content of the CG Tools Canada.

Impala: sector specific Tools

The Independent Music Companies Association, IMPALA, launched a bespoke version of the CC Tools in 2022, specifically adapted for requirements of the independent recorded music sector in the UK. JB and Impala are currently exploring a new phase of the Tools, for an international user base in the U.S.

BFI: increasing the sector’s understanding of climate action

Julie’s Bicycle has partnered with the British Film Institute (BFI) to deliver a programme of screen sector support between 2023 and 2026. We updated the Tools to include environmental data analysis for the screen industries, supporting environmental understanding and action. The programme aims to lay a solid foundation for better environmental practice and a greener screen sector in the longer term.

We have also worked with Germany and Denmark’s arts councils, contributing to a range of conversations around development of bespoke Tools.

E-Learning
Measurement of impact must go hand-in hand with learning the best way to take practical action. Julie’s Bicycle has always provided resources and guidance, and in 2023 we developed an e-learning platform which enables us to create in-depth learning content, including interactive elements, audio and video material, and distribute this at scale.

Environmental Tools Beyond Emissions
In addition to our flagship CC Tools, JB’s tools expertise has developed into other projects for measurement, and self-assessment aimed at upskilling the sector, working with partners to create comprehensive packages including digital self assessment tools, templates, e-learning components, best practice frameworks, checklists and guides.
