International touring is, by definition, contingent on travel – often by air and sea. However, aviation and shipping rely on fossil fuels and, in the short to medium term there are no viable alternatives. Both these sectors are growth sectors and therefore it is inevitable that the greenhouse gas emissions they generate will also increase.

This factsheet from 2012 gives an overview of the environmental issues associated with air and sea travel, where government policy is heading and some guidance to reduce environmental damage.
