JB is back at the Great Escape this year hosting two conversations about how music businesses and artists can shape an industry in tune with our current environmental challenges. These events are open to all delegates.

12:00 – 13:00 “Can I get more solar in the monitors?”

Music businesses including Universal Music, Abbey Road Studios, Ninja Tune, and Village Underground are already powered by renewable electricity companies. Switching to greener energy is one of the most effective things we can do to combat climate change – but what’s a green tariff anyway, were they all created equal, what questions should I be asking my energy supplier… and how do I profile the action I’m taking? In this session, Julie’s Bicycle will demystify the brave new world of green energy and host a conversation for artists and industry professionals on how we can create an industry-wide wave of renewably powered offices, venues, studios, and homes.

13:00 – 14:00 Touring vs. the World: can we really make touring greener?

How can we realistically reduce the environmental impacts of an industry built on moving vast amounts of artists, equipment, and audiences around the globe? Julie’s Bicycle hosts a conversation for artists, agents, promoters, and other industry professionals involved with touring at all scales covering: examples of artist action, ‘Green Riders’, reducing the scourges of backstage plastic and food waste, designing tours differently from the outset, and what the deal is with carbon offsetting these days: positive action or cop-out? Bring your curiosity, insights, experiences and questions. Andy Inglis is an Artist Manager, Tour Manager, Conference Manager, Lecturer, Mentor and frequent commentator on the music industries. Last year he oversaw a North American bus tour which burned through 8,000 litres (equivalent to about 300 standard household baths) of that popular carcinogen, diesel, more single-use plastic items than he could count, and threw away enough unused rider food to feed a small, hungry army. He’s going back on the road this November and is here today to learn how to do better.

Abi Edgar and Bethan Riach of Energy Revolution will discuss how they teamed up with Joss Stone and agents Diplomats of Sound to balance 2.7 million travel miles from Joss’ Total World Tour. They will be sharing the latest news from the charity and how agents, promoters, artists and audiences can start calculating and accounting for their travel. Energy Revolution is a UK charity that is pioneering an industry-wide response to climate change in live events. We support artists to measure and manage travel emissions from touring, and provide a carbon balancing service, helping individuals and companies to take positive action.
