Green Events Code of Practice Updated to Drive Sector-Wide Action

The national Green Events Code of Practice (GECoP) has been refreshed to provide a clear, robust, and consistent framework for event organisers, local authorities, and the supply chain. Developed to reflect current best practice and align with national policy, the updated Code supports the UK live events sector in achieving its target of a 50% reduction in emissions by 2030.
GECoP is published by Vision for Sustainable Events and JB, with the review chaired by LIVE Green. The update was supported by a working group of sustainability specialists – including A Greener Future, Creative Zero, and Hope Solutions – alongside event promoters Festival Republic and AEG.
Following a successful 2024 pilot, adoption of GECoP will expand to more than 20 UK cities in 2025, paving the way for a national roll-out. The aim is to provide an off-the-shelf framework and baseline for consistent event assessment across the country.
Chris Johnson, Chair of the Vision for Sustainable Events Forum, said:
“Fundamentally, the Green Code aims to answer the question, ‘What does good look like?’ This refresh brings the code up to date, providing clarity for the sector on best practice and on the action we need to take to achieve meaningful reductions in the environmental impacts of events.”
This second edition of GECoP strengthens commitments across the sector, particularly around energy. The Code now sets a target for a 100% reduction in onsite fossil fuel consumption at live events by 2030, aligning with broader commitments across the creative industries, including TV and film. HVO fuel is acknowledged as a transitional solution where electric or green hydrogen power is not yet viable.
By establishing common standards and expectations, GECoP supports the sector’s role as a driver of wider societal change, helping events to model the sustainable transition we all need to make.
