TippingPoint Events
Listed below are a handful of the events that took place over the past decade and more.
New York
6-7th December 2009
The first American TippingPoint gathering was hosted in a partnership between the British Council; the Earth Institute, Columbia University; and the CUNY Institute for Sustainable Cities. The 2 day event brought together colleagues from the arts and science communities across the New York Metropolitan region, alongside several influential thinkers from the UK.
Brussels
25-26th January 2010
This pan European event was a collaboration between TippingPoint, the British Council, the European Commission, the European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC), the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) and the Kaaitheater in Brussels. A major European gathering of artists, scientists and policy makers gathered, symbolically, at the heart of the EU in the centre of Brussels.
Montpellier
21-22nd March 2010
TippingPoint worked with the Domaine d’O in Montpellier and the British Council to organise a pan-Mediterranean event exploring the cultural context of climate change and focussing on WATER: a theme of urgent consequence to the Mediterranean basin. The Domaine d’O offers an excellent context and location for a sensitive investigation and discourse on the connections of artists and scientists. We addressed the theme of water with regard to its impact on climate change, from an environmental, social as well as economic perspective.
Cape Town
24-26th May 2010
Taking place over 3 days this gathering brought together TippingPoint, The Fynbos Foundation, the MTN Sciencentre, The Commonwealth Foundation and key partner, the British Council. Our first South African meeting was a residential event at the Spier Conference Centre in Stellenbosch. Artists from all art forms and key scientists gathered to explore the challenge of climate change and the consequences for Africa.
Oxford
12-13th September 2010
The Oxford TippingPoint event programme was 5 years old in September 2010. At Oxford 2010, we invited individuals from right across the arts and sciences, both established and younger figures as well as a significant number of people who had attended previous events. The event built on the cumulative experience of the last 5 years.
Australia
October/November 2010
In October and November 2010, TippingPoint worked with Producer Angharad Wynne Jones and the team at TippingPoint Australia on three gatherings in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.
During the events, the TippingPoint Australia Climate Commissions were launched. Each year for 10 years, The Climate Commissions chart the journey of our transition from a carbon-based society to a greener future, as we grapple with the impacts of climate change.
Newcastle
2012
This major three-day gathering of 250 people took place in partnership with the Institute for Sustainability at the University, in the Great North Museum. Memorable elements were a lively exchange between Profess or Kevin Anderson and contrarian Matt Ridley, and the launch of Arts Council England’s Sustainability Policy, via a major speech by then chief executive Alan Davey.
Weatherfronts
London, June 2014
This took place in close partnership with and at the premises of Free Word, and represented our first event focusing on a single artform – in this case literature. In other respects, it followed our normal practice, including presentations from Professor Chris Rapley of UCL and John Ashton, formerly the Foreign Secretary’s Special Representative on Climate Change.

Stories of Change
Oxford, September 2014
This event took place in partnership with the Open University’s Stories of Change project, with a joint focus on energy transitions. Powerful elements were numerous, from the evening performance in the Exeter College Chapel to a ground-breaking presentation by Stephen Peake in the Sheldonian Theatre.
Doing Nothing is Not an Option
17-19th June 2016
Organised in partnership with Warwick Arts Centre & Julie’s Bicycle this event intended to find ways of working together with individuals from different backgrounds, and coming together to find new perspectives and an answer to the question: “What can I do about this?”
