Alison Tickell established Julie’s Bicycle in 2007 in the UK music industry as a non-profit mobilising action and inspiring new thinking in response to the climate and nature crisis, JB now works across arts and culture internationally and is acknowledged as a pioneer in the field, developing much of the foundational research, ideas and resources driving cultural change.
Originally trained as a cellist, Alison’s approach is rooted in her work with jazz improviser and teacher John Stevens, whose understanding of music and community activism created the foundational values that inspired Julie’s Bicycle. Alison has been a relentless public advocate for culture-based climate action, advised and contributed to many initiatives in the field including: IFACCA, UNFCCC, G20 Culture, Creative Europe, European Parliament, national governments, networks, projects and funders. She is currently working with the Climate Heritage Network and Global Call for Culture-based Climate Action, co-chairs the Climate theme for the UK Creative Industries Council, is on the European Heritage Hub Steering Committee, and is a life-long Ashoka Fellow.

Awards:
2023: Alison Tickell was awarded the The International Society for the Performing Arts (ISPA)’s inaugural Green Champion Award – a new award presented for achievement on sustainability in the industry.
2019: JB won the WOMEX 2019 Professional Excellence Award for the: ‘rallying of artists and arts professionals from all over the world to speak and act in one powerful group’.
2019: Alison Tickell won a Tonic Award for women in theatre and performing arts, for “commitment to increasing awareness of the performing arts’ carbon footprint and implementing practical and imaginative changes to better the industry through her pioneering work for Julie’s Bicycle”.

2016: JB received an ‘Achievement Award’ at the N.I.C.E Awards (European Centre for Creative Economy).
2013: JB won the Central Green Gown Award.
2011: JB won the Green Business Award at the Music Week Awards.
